Community guidelines

Keep the row
straight

First Saff works because people tell the truth about their masjid and treat each other well. These guidelines cover everything you add: masjids, times, photos, reviews, events, services, posts, replies and fundraiser notices.

Be truthful

Add only what you know is right, and say when you're not sure.

Be kind

Assume good intent. Most mistakes are honest ones.

Respect privacy

No faces of worshippers, no one's details without their say.

Keep it real

Real places, real events, lawful services, honest notices.

Be truthful and kind

  • Add what you know to be true. If you're not sure, leave it for someone who is.
  • Disagree politely. Suggest a correction instead of arguing in replies.
  • Don't pretend to be someone else, or to speak for a masjid or organisation you don't represent.

Masjids, times and facilities

  • Copy times from the masjid's own noticeboard or announcements where you can.
  • Confirm only what you've seen yourself: a time on the board, a wudu area, a sisters' entrance.
  • Claim a masjid only if you have a real role there, such as imam, committee member, trustee or volunteer coordinator.
  • Every change keeps a history, so mistakes can be put right.

Photos

  • No faces of worshippers. Photograph the building, the entrance, the prayer hall when it's empty, the wudu area, the noticeboard.
  • Only share photos you took yourself, or that you have permission to share. Old photos of the masjid are welcome.
  • Photos are resized on your phone before upload, which removes hidden location data.

Events and services

  • Events and services must be real, and lawful where they take place.
  • Say who is organising, where and when. If plans change, update or cancel it.
  • For services such as janazah help, food banks, clinics or counselling, list only what is actually offered, with a way to reach the people who offer it.

Fundraisers

  • Fundraisers on First Saff are notices only. No money goes through the app.
  • Be clear about who is raising money, what it's for, and how to give to them directly.
  • Anyone can mark a notice legitimate or suspicious, and report it if it looks like a scam. Fundraisers need fewer reports than anything else before they're hidden for a moderator to check.
  • Before you give, check with the masjid or organisation yourself. First Saff can't guarantee a fundraiser.

No spam, no hate, no sectarian attacks

  • No advertising, repeated posts, or links that have nothing to do with the masjid or the community.
  • No hate, threats or abuse towards anyone, Muslim or not.
  • No attacks on other Muslims for their school of thought, group or masjid. Differences of opinion are part of our tradition; contempt isn't.
  • Nothing sexual, violent or otherwise inappropriate, in words or pictures.

Respect privacy

  • Don't share anyone's phone number, address or photo without their permission.
  • For a janazah or a family in need, share only what the family is happy to have shared.
  • Read our privacy policy for how First Saff itself handles your data.

How reports and moderation work

Use the flag on any masjid, event, photo, review or post. You choose a reason, such as:

Information is wrongLooks like a scamSpamOffensive or hatefulInappropriate photo or textNot their photo to share
  • You can report each thing once.
  • When enough people report something, it's hidden until a moderator checks it. Reports from people at higher levels count for more.
  • A reported masjid or profile isn't hidden. It goes straight to the moderators instead.
  • A moderator then either puts it back or removes it for good.

When the guidelines are broken

  • Anything that breaks these guidelines is removed, and the person who added it loses points.
  • Changes that others check and reject cost points too, so careless edits don't pay.
  • If someone keeps breaking the guidelines, or does something seriously harmful, we may limit what they can do or close their account.

Questions

Not sure whether something is allowed, or think a moderator got it wrong? Email hello@firstsaff.com and a person will look at it again.
